Medion Lifetab P9516 - Troubleshooting JB 1 year, 11 months ago #1641

This is a continuation of the thread
www.android-hilfe.de/medion-lifetab-p951...-mit-jelly-bean.html
on the AH forum.

I want to continue this here, because:
- all the people contributing there are also members here
- some people there think that everything has to be discussed in german - but I want Yves to take part, which means we will have a plus of 30% of contributors

Last time when I had a problem with the 3g, I found that the device /dev/ttyUSB2 has gone.
Before this I saw, that this device was accessed by the process "rild".

When the 3g (together with ttyUSB2) was gone, rild was still there.
I killed rild and it was restarted by Android.
But neither the 3g nor the ttyUSB2 have been fixed with this.

I will try to build a new kernel with the wifi and serial-8250 configured as modules.
Then I would be able to unload/load that module and see what will happen.

I found a kernel (even the right version) here:
github.com/khanning/android_kernel_ideapad_k1

I've successfuly compiled the kernel, splitted the boot.img, added the new kernel, booted it....and had no wifi
Anyone who has experience with this stuff?

Not sure of what could cause the WiFi driver malfunction, but if I remember Krook has build up
a new Wifi bcmdhd driver in his CM10 v61 version in order to get rid of the WiFi SOD problem.
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=...17&postcount=370
Not sure that Khanning is using that driver in his build.
You should test your kernel build with a Khanning JB build.

If you report errors, you should better post a kmsg or dmesg report.
It will help our Linux "doctor" (i.e Mickey with much more debug information.

If you have installed the mini terminal from the Play Store :

Open a terminal session

su
cat /proc/kmsg > /storage/sdcard1/kmsg.txt

This will create a kmsg log file in your external sd card.

Alternatively, if you want to produce a dmesg :

su
dmesg > /storage/sdcard1/dmesg.txt

You can also run the above commands from an adb session.

Then you can post the created file.

FYI
Krook is still trying to debug the WiFi problem with CM10 v6.x.
(need to reboot in order to get Wifi back to work)

In the meantime, he advises the users to install for example Auto Airplane from Don.
Run the program and tick "Run on Boot".
The program will keep running in the background.

In the O.S settings
Change Wifi->Advanced Settings -> Keep Wifi on during sleep = Always

I'm using the App since a while and I've no problem with WiFi.

@ DirtyHairy on A.H

I've also tested the mp4 capability under JB.
Not bad although the Tegra2 is really not a horse racer

Apps Tested :
MX Player with and w/o h/w acceleration (+)
RockPlayer Lite (-)
BS Player with and w/o Arm7/VFP module (++ 1080p hw frame drop ON)

For the test, I've downloaded that stunting movie of the JPL Spirit mission :
www.youtube.com/embed/XRCIzZHpFtY?rel=0 in HD720 and HD1080
(downloaded with FireFox DownloadHelper in mp4)

HD 1080p looks too "heavy" for the K1/P9516.
The sound is often trailing far behind the pictures ! (easy to verify with that video)

With HD 720p, BS Player is doing a very good job (sound/video sync).
With HD 1080p BS Player does a better job than MX Player (HW frame drop ticked)

But, to me (subjective), MX Player produces better pictures with HD720 movies (H/W acceleration).

RockPlayer Lite is unable to use the HW acceleration and cannot keep up with the video decoding speed !

I think I've found something remarkable.
Last time when the 3g died, the USB-id changes.
I haven't found what's the difference between 1404 and 1003.

On www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/ is a arm-binary I've used to reset the device, but the 1404 didn't come back.
Hmmm..

Hi Mickey,
Here is what my tablet shows when I insert a SIM.
(3G does not work - no PIN request)
After SIM insertion and reboot:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002

Despite of the 3G malfunction, the GSM function has drained 5% of the battery power during the night.

BTW, I've scoped the SIM card while booting my tablet.
It seems that there is no problem with the SIM reading.
Upon booting, I can see that the SIM Power Supply is UP (max 3V) and there is an attempt to get the SIM ATR.
I have tested a 1.8V - 3V - 5V SIM card that works OK in my iPhone 4S.
For some reason, the modem discards the SIM(country locked ?) and disable the SIM power supply.

Hello,
I'm likely missing something with the Apps update notifications.
I no longer have the little icon î located at the bottom left side of the screen.
However I've found that Firefox and Chrome had an update available in the Play Store.
Is there a hidden setting somewhere?
Thanks.
Yves

Re: Medion Lifetab P9516 - Troubleshooting JB 1 year, 10 months ago #1669

Hello Yves,
same here.
Try removing the updates from google play app, this fires the updates-available message immediately.
But only one time.?
Looks like this is a problem in playstore app.
I'm sure it worked some days ago.

I'm also missing the functionality to install apps "offline" by using a browser.
There's still the message "apps will be installed in short", but nothing happens.

Hi Yves,

to see a list of available updates you can also press the down-arrow just beside the magnifying-glass in the playstore app.

Hi Mickey,

Thanks for the other tip.

I've updated the file list in the HOWTO topic because the gapps have been updated.

goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121130-signed.zip (NEW VERSION 30-11-2012 CAUTION ONLY FOR JB 4.2 so wait until the next P9516 image)

Perhaps they have fixed the update issue. To be tested.

Hello,
for a couple of days I've noticed reboots, but only in standby mode.

Anyone else with similar problems?

Hello Mickey,
Yes, I've got the same issue a few day's ago (w/o Auto Airplane)
For that reason, I've re-installed ARP and since I've no problem.
Regards
Yves

Re: Medion Lifetab P9516 - Troubleshooting JB 1 year, 10 months ago #1684

Grrrrrrr, I've already thought that it's a problem with Wifi/3g

Some days ago when the 3g crashed, I've tried to reset the 3g, but no chance.
And I still wasn't able to build a kernel with running Wifi and Wifi/3g build as modules.

Looks like the android kernel stuff is a *** in the ***
Either the kernel isn't running or the toolchain isn't working 8-(

Too bad.

FYI, when it happened with my tablet the 3G functionality was not yet fixed.

Now that it is working, I've a question.
If I switch 3G/mobile data OFF, the power indicator at the bottom right side does not change.
The little triangle with the RF power bars is still showing the N/W power.
However if I quickly switch the tablet OFF then ON (no reboot), then the indicator is empty showing that 3G is OFF.
Do you observe the same behavior ?

Yves

Re: Medion Lifetab P9516 - Troubleshooting JB 1 year, 10 months ago #1692

Hello Yves,
when my triangle is empty, the 3g has crashed.
When 3g is active, a small "3g" pops up beside the triangle.

You can activate flight-mode and afterwards activate wlan. Then the triangle disappears. But I don't know if/what's the difference

Hello Mickey,

Thanks for your information.
I tested the airplane mode and as you described, and the triangle disappears.
That's the only way to hide that triangle.
Even with Mobile Data OFF, the triangle is present and shows the network power.

I cannot see the 3G popping up, as I've only EDGE access at home.
I will have to test it while outside.

Do you know if there is an App that can read the SMS sent to the SIM in the tablet.
I've tested several apps to no avail.
MySMS tries to send an SMS for registration before activating the program.
Stupid, I cannot read the SMS of course.
The other apps are trying to connect to another phone via Bluetooth.

A simple app that would read the SMS stored in the SIM would be enough.

Thanks
Yves
