TOOLBOX 1 : ROM IMAGE to return the tablet to ICS 4.0.3 STOCK from Medion.

If you have upgraded your tab to CM10 JB vx.x, you should consider having a solution to return your P9516 tablet to ICS 4.0.3 stock.
Even if you have upgraded to the K1 flavor, that image should return your tablet to MEDION ICS 4.0.3.(no assert check)

You need of course to have a rooted tablet with a CWM recovery image.
See how to NvFlash the CWM 6.0.1.0 here:
www.avi-plus.com/repair-tips-forum/misce...6-tablet/page-2.html
Below you will find the link to download the CWM zip-install that will allow you to do it.

*DISCLAIMER 1*
This site bloggers and YLG80 takes no responsibility for any fault or damage caused
by any procedures within this guide. No warranties of any kind are given.
If you don't know what is nvflash, adb, root or cwm, chances are that you don't need to do
what is described below.
In short, if you hard brick your device, you are on your own.

*CAUTION*
Do never interrupt the upgrade while its running.
This is especially important when you see start updating EBT and BCT on the tablet screen.(blob flashing)

The stock ICS rom file is the CH version.
If you want to return to stock with another country ID, you should download the appropriate file from the lenovo ftp site
and patch it.
We cannot store each type of file with so many country ID's.
Sorry.
If you are extremely kind with us, we could exceptionally do it for you.

Last word. There is NO REASON to use that image if you are still running ICS.
Simply restore your device to factory default.

FALLBACK SOLUTION
If something wrong happens during the reboot, you still have a "parachute" with NvFlash
With NvFlash you can return to recovery and flash whatever you want to restart an upgrade. (see NvFlash thread)

Now, how to downgrade your tablet to ICS stock:

Download directly the zip file into your tablet or upload it to /storage/sdcard1/ via adb.
Here is the link to download the file MD_LIFETAB_P9516_21_21_RESTORE_STOCK-signed.zip :
dc628.4shared.com/download/TW4MPu0F/MD_L...16_21_21_RESTORE.zip

If you use adb to upload the file, here is the command.

adb push MD_LIFETAB_P9516_21_21_RESTORE_STOCK-signed.zip storage/sdcard1/

As you are most likely running CM10, you have the option to restart your tablet into recovery. Do it so.

Once in CWM Recovery:
Use VOL UP, VOL DOWN, HOME and POWER to navigate through the menu.

Execute first "wipe cache partition". (normally it's done with the next option, but just to be sure)

Execute "Wipe data/factory reset"

Select "Install from zip"
then choose zip from sdcard and select the file "D_LIFETAB_P9516_21_21_RESTORE_STOCK-signed.zip"
Select the file then select yes

Wait until CWM returns to the menu.Check the data logging on the bottom of the screen for any error.
If there are errors, don't panic. Try again. (You still have adb, so you can upload again the zip file, if it was found corrupted.)

Select "reboot system now" and reboot your device.

Your tablet will reboot and start ICS 4.0.3 .
Configure the O.S. to fit your needs.
After a while you will see that an update is available.
This is the normal Medion OTA update. Acknowledge the update and follow the instructions.

If you have to return the tablet for repair, you should also flash the original stock recovery.img using Nvflash
The above zip install is supposed to overwrite the recovery partition, but sometimes it does not do it.
So proceed with the original stock recovery flashing with NvFlash as explained below. (see NvFlash thread for more information)

Here is the script to to do it :
dc416.4shared.com/download/icfcF3qn/nvfl...ckrecovery-batch.zip

Decompress that tool in your nvflash directory.
Open a command windows and get to the NvFlash directory.
Type flash-stockrecovery-win and follow the instructions.
Reboot your tablet.

That's it.

Next we will publish CM10 JB upgrade patched to keep the Medion flavor.

TOOLBOX 2 : A Jelly Bean CM10 v6 image for the MEDION Lifetab P9516.

This CM10 Jelly Bean ROM image was originally developed by Krook1 for the Lenovo K1.
We have customized it for the LT P9516.VID/PID are OK and the MEDION_LT_P9516 is ok)

CM10 JB will provide you with a better tablet experience i.e a much more responsive pad
with fluid graphics and overall with a permanent rooted tablet.
On top of that, you will have to ability to reboot in recovery via the shutdown menu.

You need to have a rooted tablet with a CWM recovery image to install that image.
See how to NvFlash the CWM 6.0.1.0 here:
www.avi-plus.com/repair-tips-forum/misce...6-tablet/page-2.html

Credits:
Krook1 (original K1 image published on forum.xda-developers.com)
Ameisentaetowierer for the CWM recovery image fix (VID/PID) and various fixes+f/w & s/w tools + major contribution in testing and fixing.
Khannings for various build and information of great help to unlock the recovery mode.
Andri Odd for the avago-pt.kl patch for the Home button behaviour and pre-testing the images.

CAUTION:
Please backup your apps and data before doing any upgrade.
You would better use Titanium Backup to do so. Select the backup option : Save all apps and data preferably on your external SD..

You MUST update to CM10 v6 first if you want your recovery image to be automatically updated to ClockWorkMod recovery 6.0.1.0.
You cannot upgrade directly to CM10 v6.1 which is to be considered as a simple update with no app or data loss.

FALLBACK SOLUTION
If something wrong happens during the reboot, you still have a "parachute" with NvFlash
With NvFlash you can return to recovery and flash whatever you want to restart an upgrade. (see NvFlash thread)

We will assume that your tablet is still running the ICS O.S. 4.0.3 rooted.

DOWNLOAD
Download directly the zip file into your tablet or upload it to /storage/sdcard1/ via adb.
Here is the link to download the file medion-lt-p9516-cm10-v6-cwm6010.zip :
www.dropbox.com/s/1m1onzaviw83hi7/medion...6-cwm6010-signed.zip
dc625.4shared.com/download/ZEK6JLsU/medi...6-cm10-v6-cwm601.zip
As you will have to reinstall the Google Apps (Gapps), download also the install package from :
goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
and if you want a working camera download also Picasa :
goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-picasa-20121011-signed.zip

If you use adb to upload the files from your PC, here are the commands.

adb push medion-lt-p9516-cm10-v6-cwm6010.zip /storage/sdcard1/
adb push gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip /storage/sdcard1/
adb push apps-jb-picasa-20121011-signed.zip /storage/sdcard1/

This will store the zip files in your external SD card.

SWITCH TO RECOVERY FROM ICS (skip this if you are already running CM9 or CM10)

You will use NvFlash to reboot in recovery. (see dedicated threat for the NvFlash installation)
- Download that batch file to your PC Nvflash directory.
for Linux : www.avi-plus.com/media/kunena/attachment...t-recovery-linux.tgz
for Win : www.avi-plus.com/media/kunena/attachment...oot-recovery-win.zip
- Open a CMD window in your NvFlash directory and run the batch file.

For further details, read this post:
www.avi-plus.com/repair-tips-forum/misce...516-tablet.html#1489

Once in CWM Recovery:
Use VOL UP, VOL DOWN, HOME and POWER to navigate through the menu.

Execute first "wipe cache partition". (normally it's done with the next option, but just to be sure)
Execute "Wipe data/factory reset". Important because you upgrade from ICS to JB.
Select "Install from zip" then choose zip from sdcard and select the file "medion-lt-p9516-cm10-v6-cwm601.zip "
Select the file then select yes

Wait until CWM returns to the menu.
Check the data logging on the bottom of the screen for any error.
If there are errors, don't panic. Try again. (You still have adb, so you can upload again the zip file, if it was found corrupted.)

Select "reboot system now" and reboot your device.

Your tablet will reboot and start JB 4.1.2 after a new splash screen .
Configure the O.S. to fit your needs. Don’t forget to reactivate adb in the developers settings

INSTALL THE GAPPS
As you are now running JB, it’s much easier to reboot to recovery.
Simply a long press on the POWER button, the select reboot, recovery and touch OK.

Install the Gapps and the Picasa app all at once. No need to clean cache or wipe data.

Finally restore your backup file.

You are done.
Next time, for the update v6.1, it will me much easier.

Yves and I looked around for an update of the baseband processor, because I thought that the 3G crashes have been caused by the modem firmware.

It looks like I was wrong regarding a bug in the modem firmware, but the update of the firmware showed me something I didn't know before.
I will discuss the details in the troubleshooting thread.

Here's a firmware upgrade/downgrade for the Huawei EM820W modem.
The files are taken from ROMs for other Android-tablets, which use the same modem.

Install via CWM-recovery:
db.tt/Mawsnj7N (baseband version 11.810.09.12.00)
db.tt/tmKj0haZ (baseband version 11.810.09.24.00)

I've not noticed any difference between the two versions, so I think there is no need for you to upgrade!

I followed every post since androidhilfe.de about flashing a custom rom to the LT!
Finally I got time to do this today and I have to thank you for this great port!
I hope, someone will work on another update for our tablet, as I can see how my old SGS1 learn to fly with android 4.2.2., but for now I'm very happy with CM10!
3 times a "!", but its how I feel: I'm very happy...

Keep on the good work and again: THANK YOU!

I stumbled on this some days ago.
Neither a ROM or Howto, but very interesting information about Tegra boot process and BCT.

P9516 Rescue-CD - your swiss-army-knife

I think that Linux/Unix is great stuff.
The following tool should give you an idea what can be done with Linux.
Accessing the P9516 is very easy with Linux. No need to install drivers etc, just download adb and nvflash and go ahead.

So I decided to create a bootable CD-ROM that can be used for various things you want to do with your tablet.
I started with some simple commands and now it has become some sort of swiss-army-knife

The CD-ROM is based on grml distribution (www.grml.org) and I had only little work to extend it to meet my needs.
Please be aware, that I haven't changed grml to install the P9516 tools together with a "harddisk installation" of grml.
If you want to do so, boot the CD-ROM, go to shell and "cd" into /usr/local/p9516. This stuff must be copied to your local harddisk.

This software comes as it is. Use it on your own risk.
I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong or if it doesn't work.

Ouh...someone found an error..no...not really...maybe it's becomes a feature when it is documented...
OK, here's some documentation on the menu.
First of all:
The tool tries to detect the current tablet status by querying the USB bus
So it can detect if the tablet is in APX-mode or "normal mode" (Android or Recovery is running) or if it' switched/disconnected.
1) refresh
-- refresh current status on USB bus
2) toggle resume
-- if tablet is in APX-mode and you use nvflash to access it, it starts nv3p. This is different from APX, but looks the same on the USB bus.
-- when tablet is in nv3p, nvflash needs to use the parameter "--resume", or it will hang!
-- booting the tablet also resets nv3p.
-- if you see some nv3p message on the tablet and you want to execute another nvflash command, please ensure that Resume shows "Y"
3) readme
-- the famous readme...nothing to be proud of
4) liesmich
-- das tolle liesmich, nichts worauf ich stolz bin
5) ################ noflash ##################
-- the following commands don't use nvflash, so they should'nt be able to harm your tablet
6) adb shell
-- works with "normal" Android and CWM-recovery, but not with stock-recovery
7) adb boot recovery
-- works with krooks JellyBean and CWM-recovery, but shouldn't work with stock ICS or stock recovery
8) adb boot normal
-- works with krooks JellyBean and CWM-recovery, but shouldn't work with stock ICS or stock recovery
9) adb boot APX
-- works with krooks JellyBean and CWM-recovery, but shouldn't work with stock ICS or stock recovery
10) ################ scripts ################
11) todo....hmmmm...
12) ################ flash (APX) ################
-- this could brick your tablet! You've been warned!
13) get partitiontable
-- use nvflash to read partitiontable and show it in arranged form
14) exit APX mode
-- boot normal android
15) check/repair filesystems
-- run a script that executes e2fsck on some partitions
-- can help if your tablet stucks on Medion screen (if not too much of your filesystem is corrupt)
16) hard format /data
-- if you use "format /data" in CWM-recovery, it deletes only files on /data, but doesn't actually format it
-- this step really formats /data, and this also includes /sdcard, which resides in /data/media
-- if step 15 doesn't help, because too much of your filesystem is corrupt, try this
17) flash recovery boot
-- instructs the tablet to boot the recovery(SOS) partition
18) flash and boot CWM recovery image
-- flash famous CWM recovery to SOS partition and boot it
-- you may loose your stock recovery
-- when you reboot the CWM recovery, it may ask if you want to keep it,
-- this is because stock ICS will overwrite the SOS partition on every boot!
-- if you want to keep CWM recovery, answer YES here
19) flash root
-- installs superuser-apk and su binary on your tablet, so it's rooted
20) flash gps fix
-- this will set correct permissions on /data/gps and exchange /etc/gps/gpsconfig.xml
-- your gps should fix within 1 minute...outdoors please!
21) flash blob
-- don't use this when your tablet has 64GB internal card
-- this blob came with ICS from Lenovo/Medion
-- you shouldn't need this
22) flash clean partitiontable
-- don't use this when your tablet has 64GB internal card
-- only needed when nothing else is working, use this as a last resort!
-- erases everything and flashes blob (#21) as well as CWM (#18)
-- afterwards you have to flash JellyBean or ICS using CWM
23) flash JellyBean ...
-- flashes JellyBean on your tablet
-- if you're running ICS, please do a factory reset, or your tablet will stuck on boot!
24) flash /tmp/update.zip
-- from the main menu (grml) you can setup a network connection
-- in /usr/local/p9516/urls.txt you'll find the URLs for several ICS stock images
-- use "wget" to download one of them to /tmp/update.zip and flash it
-- if you understand what I'm talking about, you don't need this CD
25) remove password/pattern lock
-- unlock your device
-- in case you forgot your password

Some more information:
This CD-rom is a hybrid image, you can also "flash" it onto usb sticks (see www.grml.org)

Your tablet uses several partitions. I will focus on 3 of them to explain what this CD does and how it works:
The 3 partitions are named SOS, LNX and APP (please have a look at Yves very good description here: www.avi-plus.com/repair-tips-forum/misce...516-tablet.html#1473)
In normal mode, your tablet boots the kernel from LNX partition and then starts the operating system from APP partition.
If you want to update (OTA) your tablet, the update process needs full access to these partitions, that's why you have the SOS partition.
From the SOS partition the tablet boots some mini-android that can run in memory and has full access to LNX and APP.

In most cases my CD reads the position of the SOS partition, makes a backup of this partition and then flashes CWM recovery.
Then the SOS partiton (CWM recovery) is booted and the neccesary commands are executed.
If you execute #19 (gain root) for example, a CWM installable ZIP is copied to the tablet and installed just as if you would do it manually using CWM.
Afterwards the backup of your SOS partition is flashed back to the SOS partition and the tablet is booted (to recovery mode).

If you have any questions, just ask me.
If you have any suggestions, just tell me.

Updates:

Thanks Mickey. That's really a great toolset !

For those who have never explored the MEDION LIFETAB P9516 DVD found in the tablet box, please note that
the Nvidia fasboot drivers (Windows) and the linux utilities are included in:
\source\vendor\nvidia\proprietary_src\prebuilt\host\

I've zipped them for your convenience.

Bug reported by Frank on AH:
The bug was in the "su"-cmd of "flash root".
Tablet was rooted, but didn't ask superuser.apk for permission.

Happy easter

Hello,

I know it might be seen as a double posting, sorry for that. My original posting was written at android-hilfe.de in German language. Avi-plus.com is a forum in English language, and I want to gain the makers of the CyanogenMod port for my problem . I guess, concerning my problem this forum here is the better place for its experts ...

Yeah, my problem: I own a Medion LT p9516, Swiss model with 64 GB which doesn't boot properly.

What happened: I wanted to reflash CWM/Jelly Bean on my p9516. Therefor I used Mickey's Live CD as I wanted to avoid the Windows Driver hussle (Win7 x64, in fact I tried but NVflash won't find the device). After flashing the tablet, it seems to reboot into APX-mode. Normal boot isn't possible anymore. It will always show 2 LEDs permanently lit in white and the display will remain black. It might be an issue with corrupt bootloader or SOS partition?

Right now I am able to connect via APX-mode. Reflashing to CWM recovery works, but CWM 6.0.1.1 won't exist not permanently. Checking partition tables is OK, I can even reflash partition table/ Jelly bean. After that I have to "exit APX-Mode" (option #14).

Upon exiting to APX-Mode the bootloader will be rewritten and the tablet afterwards boots to Jelly Bean. Unfortunately it will show the Lenovo logo instead of the Medion logo.

And doing a shutdown / reboot from Jelly Bean the tablet will reboot to APX. As said above for normal boot I must use Mickys CD and exit APX-Mode

Can you please help me to fix my 2 problems (Lenovo logo and corrupt bootloader)?

Regards,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

from what I've seen on Android-Hilfe, the output from nvflash looks good.
It seems like we "only" have a software problem.

If you have an external sd-card, you can also try this:
Download firmware xx_p9516_21_21_120604_xx (NOT the latest -> "21_22") from download.lenovo.com/slates/k1/OTA/ and store it on the external sd.
Flash cwm-recovery on your tablet using my cd-rom
Boot cwm-recovery using my cd-rom
install firmware 21_21 from external sd.

If it works, please check that yor tablet still reports 64gb of memory.

Hi Micky,

first of all thank you for your help. I was able to flash the Stock-ICS downloaded from Lenovo (21_21 CH-Version) using an external SD-card in CWM recovery. Booting from CWM recovery, I was asked "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?" Yes / No. I tried both, anyway same result: Android wouldn't boot.

So I used your toolset and flashed BCT with no avail. Only "Exit APX" brought me to booting ICS. Upon first normal reboot I have the same problem again: my tablet won't reboot Android, instaed it boots into APX.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hello Thomas and Mickey,
Now I understand the story from Mickey's PM. (story on AH and here !)
It looks indeed that your bootloader is corrupted.
I guess you can continue to soft boot your tablet because you've used nvflash with the bootloader-new option, which installs
a bootloader in ram.
But as soon as you hard reset or switch/off then on, you loose the temporary bootloader and your tablet falls into APX.
That how I believe it happens.
I understand why Mickey was talking about the ODMDATA in his PM.
I've never verified the assertion : I think that you will have to use the ODMDATA option to reflash the b/l.
Hopefully it will work with no need to specify the SBK.
Mickey's proposal to flash ICS rel 21 from the OTA site was clever.
Because that release includes the blobs and bootimage.
But I understand that it did not resolve your issue.

As far as I can see from your screen shot on AH, your tablet has still the correct ODM word = 0x30098011
I can see from a screen shot of a previous bootloader flash failure that nvflash complained about the ODM.
Likely because the odmdata option was missing in the command.
I would try again with the ODM option.
Hopefully it will not complain again about ... the SBK.
This is always dangerous to play with the bootloader, but you have no choice but to try.
Normally the first stage is protected and you will still have access to the APX mode in case of troubles.

As mentioned to Mickey, if you a need a dump from my Swiss 64Gb machine, just ask.
Regards.
Yves

BTW have a look to the recent posts in this forum :
devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/540977/...50-ventana/?offset=5
Same ODMDATA. But I don't know if the guy has resolved the issue.

Hello Yves,

thank you for your support.
That webpage from Stephen Warren looks really interesting.
I didn't knew that there's a variable part in the bct that can be zero'ed out.

Just tried it with my tablet and it still boots fine.
@Yves: can you send me the first 4096 bytes from your partition to compare that stuff?
command: nvflash --rawdeviceread 0 1 bct.img --blob blob_new.bin --bl bootloader_encrypt_new.bin --go

@Thomas: I will pm you a script for testing.

Hello Yves,

thanks for the file.
I've compared Thomas' bct with mine. They are both the same.
And they are different from yours (db.tt/WoB28BEr).

I will try to flash your BCT on my tablet when I'm back home, to see what happens
Then I'll write a script for Thomas to use your BCT.

Hi Mickey,

How did you compare the bct files.

I've compared my bct file uploaded in the previous post with an old bct file located in my nvflash directory.
Surprising : they are different.

When I'm using the following command:

nvflash --bct bct-lt.bct --getbct --blob blob_new.bin --bl bootloader_encrypt_new.bin --go

The new bct files is the same as the previous one downloaded from my tablet in Oct 2012.
Of course this is not a rawread command.
So I guess it's only the partition table ??

Here is the file created with the above command.

OK, found your comparison with hex-dif.

A few bytes here and there are indeed different !
